2007 Schiltz 100

This ranking was originally conceptualized by the Honorable Patrick J. Schiltz, U.S. District Judge, District of Minnesota. Judge Schiltz graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and served as an editor for the Law Review. He was a U.S. Supreme Court clerk prior to joining Faegre & Benson, where he became partner. Judge Schiltz left private practice in 1995 to become a faculty member of the Notre Dame Law School. He then helped found the University of St. Thomas School of Law. He was nominated as a District Court Judge in December 2005.

The Schiltz 100 ranking is designed to indicate the best Big Law firms to work for as an associate. It is based on an inverse correlation between profits per partner and firm prestige. The theory is that firms with higher profits per partner leverage their associates more, meaning less quality of life for associates. Lower profits per partner mean associates are being leveraged less and hopefully have a better quality of life. Firms with higher prestige have more resources, supposedly, and better reputations, which is good for associates. The ideal firm on the Schiltz 100 would have the lowest profits per partner (180) and the highest prestige (180). Jones Day gets the top spot this year with a score of 167.
